The increasingly intense “War of Drones” in Ukraine is likely to lead to a new development soon: On February 6, President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a decree instructing Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers, including the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to examine whether units with unmanned systems should be established as an independent branch of the armed forces.

Based on the results of this review, appropriate proposals are to be submitted to the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Selensky said. This step is intended to further increase the capabilities of Ukraine’s armed forces to deploy unmanned and robotic air, sea and ground systems and to better ensure the readiness to use such systems for their intended purpose than is already the case.

President Volodymyr Zelensky and Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov agree on the importance of drones in the fight against Russia.

Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov also agrees: “The creation of a new branch of the armed forces would be an important step in the development of the Ukrainian army. This would result in new lessons, application practices and scenarios, planning, orders, new approaches and, subsequently, new technologies.” Umyerev emphasizes that unmanned systems Ukraine in its defensive campaign against Russia have already provided many good services. “The next steps for the Unmanned Systems Forces are to gain further experience and develop greatness. To victory!” https://militaeraktuell.at/general-hokanson-partnerschaft-mit-bundesheer-waechst/ Armed forces are characterized by specific methods of combat deployment. They have a type-specific operational art, technology and tactics. Originally, branches of the armed forces only covered two different areas of warfare: combat on land and at sea. Subsequently, naval infantry, air force, space forces, coast guard and cyber warfare were added – and now, for the first time, drone forces. Whether an army is organized into branches depends not least on its size. In very large armies, such as the US armed forces, there are separate ministers for the respective branches of the armed forces.
