From February 10 to 21, 2025, the helicopter high altitude landing course of the Austrian Armed Forces took place from 10 to 21 February 2025 – for training and further education as well as to obtain the qualification for high-altitude landings. The exercises were carried out in Styria, Tyrol, Salzburg, Upper Austria and Carinthia.

Helicopters of all four types operated by the Austrian Armed Forces (OH-58, AB-212, AW169, S-70A-42) were stationed in Aigen im Ennstaal and flew their training missions from there.

The training objectives of the high mountain landing course include:

  • Learning and practicing take-offs and landings at high altitudes (over 3,000 meters).
  • Getting to know the performance parameters and flight characteristics of the respective helicopters at high altitudes.
  • The calculation and practical testing of the maximum permissible take-off and landing mass for a specific landing site.
  • Experiencing and coping with physical and mental stress in high-altitude flight and applying appropriate countermeasures to safeguard the flight.
  • Flying meteorological phenomena such as foehn winds, downdrafts and rapidly changing weather conditions.
  • Recognizing and avoiding existing obstacles such as ropes, power lines and lifts.
