According to a report by Politico citing information from EU diplomats, the EU states are preparing a military aid package worth at least six billion euros for Ukraine in order to strengthen Kyiv’s strategic position at the start of the US-led talks with Russia.

The package is to include one and a half million artillery shells and air defense systems, among other things, and would be one of the largest EU military aid since the Russian invasion in 2022 (-> latest news from the Ukraine war). The official announcement could be made ahead of the EU Commissioners’ highly symbolic visit to Kiev on February 24.

According to the Politico report, two of the diplomats emphasized that the six billion euros is only a starting point – the amount could rise to ten billion or more once countries check their stocks and provide additional weapons. EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the package at their next regular meeting in Brussels.
