The Rheinmetall Group has landed a major order for the supply of loitering Hero ammunition in Hungary. The corresponding contracts have now been signed. According to the German company, the order value of the ammunition is in the low three-digit million euro range. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2024 and are expected to be completed in 2025.
Hero Loitering Munition is a family of field-proven, widely used effectors manufactured and distributed in Europe as part of a cooperation between Israel’s UVision Air Ltd. and Rheinmetall. In October 2021, Rheinmetall and UVision agreed on a strategic partnership to jointly address the rapidly growing market segment of precision-guided munitions. https://www.militaeraktuell.at/bundesheer-5m-id-von-leonardo-ist-gelandet/ Hero precision munitions provide independent target engagement capabilities as well as high-end reconnaissance, surveillance and detection capabilities and can independently locate, track and engage time-critical, low-signature enemy targets beyond the line of sight. The munition circles over the target area, locates and tracks the enemy, analyzes potential targets, helps select high-value targets and the appropriate timing, direction and angle of attack, and finally, when commanded by the operator, delivers a precision strike. The loitering ammunition systems of the Hero family offer a high degree of commonality and can therefore be operated from the same control and data link terminal on the ground. According to Rheinmetall, all Hero systems are “designed for demanding battlefield conditions, including environments without GPS reception or where radio communications are disrupted”. Hero ammunition is already in service with numerous armed forces around the world and has already proven itself time and again against infantry targets, moving light vehicles, tanks, enemy field fortifications, air defense systems and critical infrastructure.
