Boeing this week delivered the first of five P-8A Poseidons on order to the Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency (NDMA), which is operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF).
The aircraft, named “Vingtor”, was handed over to the NDMA at a ceremony at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. This milestone comes four years after NDMA and the US Navy signed an agreement for the P-8A and two years before the new aircraft are scheduled to take over maritime patrol duties in the far north of Norway. The four remaining Norwegian aircraft are all at an advanced stage of production and will be handed over to the NDMA next year. The Royal Norwegian Air Force is the second operator of the P-8A Poseidon in Europe alongside the Royal Air Force (RAF) – an important milestone in European interoperability for maritime patrol capabilities. Germany will put the P-8A into service at the beginning of 2025.
