Around 500 militia soldiers from the Vienna 2 “Maria Theresia” Jäger Battalion practiced last week at the 7th Jäger Brigade’s unit exercise under the motto “Forward23” at the Bruckneudorf military training area. After the formation of the command and the organizational preparation by the key personnel in the previous week, the remaining soldiers of the unit moved into the Maria Theresa Barracks in Vienna.

The Jägerbataillon Wien 2, together with its “sister unit” Jägerbataillon Wien 1 “Hoch und Deutschmeister”, is subordinate to the Vienna Military Command and is mobilized when necessary. The battalions hold a militia exercise every two years. “My soldiers are citizens in uniform. It is a pleasure for me to see them serve our homeland with commitment and conviction during every exercise,” says battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Markus Hornof.

After all the conscripted soldiers had arrived at the Maria Theresa barracks and the organizational procedures, such as the medical examination, safety briefings and the issue of new equipment, the battalion moved to the Bruckneudorf training area. The “protection” type of operation was trained there. The soldiers operated checkpoints, set up liaison scout teams and reconnoitred the area to secure the assigned protected objects and rooms. Realistic scenarios such as first aid and the transportation of the wounded were also practised. Every soldier is trained in the area of self-help and comrade assistance, and this necessary and important knowledge of the soldier should also be maintained and further developed. The soldiers must be able to take on these and other tasks in an emergency. https://militaeraktuell.at/wir-steigern-die-human-performance/ Brigadier Kurt Wagner, the military commander of Vienna, was impressed by the high level of motivation of the Jäger battalion in Bruckneudorf. “Despite the difficult conditions, the exercise is going very well. All the soldiers deployed are showing a high level of commitment. I would like to thank all the practising militia soldiers for their commitment,” said Brigadier Wagner after his duty supervision at the military training area. Major General Erwin Hameseder, the Austrian Armed Forces’ Commissioner for Militia, and Major General Martin Dorfer, Head of Directorate 1 – Operations, also visited the troops. The generals gained an impression of the material and personnel situation as well as the operational readiness of the battalion through a situation presentation and an “after action review” by the commanders. They also spoke with the militia soldiers about the current exercise, the current situation of the militia and the compatibility of militia activities with civilian work.
