The Swedish defense agency FMV (Försvarets Materielverk) has signed a contract with the French defense contractor Thales for the delivery of the Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission Compact (GM200 MM/C) medium-range radar.

“On the basis of close international cooperation within NATO, the new system will make a significant contribution to safeguarding Swedish airspace sovereignty,” according to a recent press release.

The GM200 MM/C is a medium-range radar of the latest generation with 4D AESA technology, which, according to the manufacturer, “enables significantly improved air situational awareness” and offers “increased time-on-target capability across a broad threat spectrum”. According to Thales, this is a “decisive advantage in complex operational scenarios”.

“We are very proud to have been selected by FMV to further strengthen Sweden’s sovereign defense capability in an increasingly challenging security environment. The Thales GM200 MM/C with its high technology will play a central role in national security,” explains Håkan Ahlström, Country Director Sweden at Thales.

According to FMV, the new radar is part of a new sensor system for air and surface surveillance and will replace the existing PS-871 radar. The order is worth around 90 million euros and delivery of the first system is planned for 2026.

In addition, Sweden has also recently Saab an order worth 62 million euros for the Giraffe 1X radar for ground-based air defense (GBAD).
