Thales delivered the 17th and last radar system to the Bundeswehr on October 16. German Armed Forces to the Bundeswehr. The project was thus completed within the originally planned timeframe. Over the past three years, a total of 17 Thales warning and alerting systems for protection against indirect fire, or WASI for short, have been procured by the Bundeswehr as part of an immediate deployment initiative (SiE).
“This successful introduction would not have been possible without the cooperative, pragmatic and targeted collaboration of all the departments involved,” emphasized Jan Gesau, the responsible department head at the procurement office, at the handover of the last system in Koblenz. After the contract with Thales was signed in March 2021, just two months after the tendering process began, the first systems were handed over to the troops for training in the second half of 2021. The first system proved its worth as early as July 2022 during deployment in Mali as a protection system for the Gao military camp. https://militaeraktuell.at/175-jahre-schiess-und-versuchsplatz-felixdorf/ The radar systems, known as Ground Alerter 10 (GA10), are able to identify RAM projectiles (rockets, artillery and mortar rounds) at an early stage, analyze their trajectory and trigger an alarm as soon as it becomes apparent that an impact is imminent in the area in question thanks to their 360-degree coverage. The parallel calculation of the firing position also provides important information for early and appropriate intervention. Due to its ease of use, the system is also suitable for protecting convoys outside the field camp, for example, and can also be used for evacuation operations or as part of national and alliance defense. The quick set-up and dismantling as well as the simple handling are decisive factors.
RAM weapons pose a threat to German forces in the various areas of operation, particularly from enemy asymmetric forces. In the future, the Bundeswehr hopes that soldiers on deployment will be comprehensively protected against these threats.
