Around 120 soldiers have a common goal: they want to become officers. They are currently being prepared for this at the Army NCO Academy in Enns. The officer candidates of the Austrian Armed Forces learned how to move safely and survive in low mountain ranges. army at the Hochfilzen military training area at the beginning of March.
Challenging mountain building
A wide range of subjects were on the program during the troop mountain training, including marching in the mountains, combat duty, knot tying, correct roping techniques, handling the avalanche transceiver and measures to maintain combat strength, such as makeshift camp construction.
The food was also prepared by the soldiers under field conditions. The purpose of the training was to train mobility and survival skills as well as combat in low mountain ranges.
Major Christoph Pühringer, chief instructor at the Army NCO Academy, explained at the mountain training course: “We are currently in the second month of training, and the training will continue to follow the focus of combat service – in the types of operations and in the procedures for ensuring deployment.”
Future team leaders
In the first five months, the career officer candidates learn the most important military basics, such as how to use their equipment correctly or how to orient themselves in the field. They take on their first leadership tasks and are thus introduced to their future role as a team leader right at the start of their training.
