Rheinmetall Air Defence is – nomen est omen – specialized in defending against threats from the air. Managing Director Oliver Dürr explains in an interview with Militär Aktuell (-> see also the Militär Aktuell interview with Oliver Dürr in the June 2024 issue) which systems his company relies on and how these systems work together to achieve their full effect.

The conversation revolves around passive sensors and the Skyranger air defense tower (-> after Austria and Germany, Denmark has now also opted for the system) through to the 35-millimeter anti-aircraft gun and the system used by the Austrian Armed Forces planned extension of the system’s service life. https://youtu.be/ZY51TuwX7GY

The German Armed Forces commissioned Rheinmetall Air Defence with the comprehensive modernization of its existing 35-millimeter anti-aircraft guns at the end of last year. The existing twin guns will be brought up to the latest standards, coupled with a high-performance sensor system and integrated into Rheinmetall’s Skymaster command and control system. This allows air targets to be detected and identified at an early stage. The command and control system also enables the operator to create a local air situation picture, better assess the threat situation and initiate a strike in close coordination with higher-level authorities.
