The Austrian Armed Forces sells the Meidlinger barracks to Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft mbH (BIG) and uses the proceeds to make urgently needed investments in the Maria Theresien barracks, the Van Swieten barracks and the Vega-Payer-Weyprecht barracks.
Today’s Council of Ministers decided to transfer the military part of the area also known as the Heckenast-Burian command building. As part of the efficient use and development of the Vienna site planned by the Federal Ministry of Defense, four hectares of the barracks, which are no longer required for military purposes, are to be sold to Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft mbH (BIG). The employees currently still working on site were informed of this plan in advance and will move to new locations at the end of 2024. “We want to use the proceeds from the sale of our barracks to modernize other locations in Vienna. Our goal of ‘Mission Forward’ will thus be consistently pursued and other construction projects of the Austrian Armed Forces realized. For more than ten years now, new buildings and large-scale modernizations have been carried out in Vienna. Because only with a well-equipped infrastructure can we create the basis for a more modern and operational armed forces,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. https://militaeraktuell.at/sikorsky-bell-us-armee-streicht-fara-programm/ “With Federal Minister Tanner, for the first time in ten years there is movement in the renewal of military properties in Vienna. A total of 47.7 million euros, which are additionally available as a result of this measure, will be incorporated into future infrastructure plans as part of the “2032 Reconstruction Plan” and used for the modernization of the Austrian Armed Forces properties. Among other things, investments will be made in existing areas of Vienna, such as the accommodation buildings in the Maria Theresa Barracks, the modernization of the Army Hospital in the Van Swieten Barracks and the construction of the new Army Logistics School in the Vega-Payer-Weyprecht Barracks. “This will improve the working and general conditions for Vienna’s soldiers, civilian staff and, above all, those serving in the basic armed forces. Over the next few years, we will also be investing around 200 million euros in infrastructure in the province of Vienna,” continued Minister Tanner. In future, the area of the “Meidlinger Kaserne” is to be developed for the security center of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
