As part of the Italian Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) program, Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), a joint venture between Fincantieri and Leonardohas been awarded the contract for the construction of a fourth patrol vessel. The contract between contract between OSN and the Italian Navy for the construction of three patrol vessels with an option for three more ships.

This option is now being exercised, at least in part. The total value of this contract amounts to around 236 million euros. In the coming days, OSN will finalize the subcontracts with Fincantieri and Leonardo worth around 163 million euros and 70 million euros respectively. The OPV program aims to contribute to the modernization and renewal of the Italian Navy, ensuring capabilities for presence and surveillance, maritime patrol, control of commercial traffic, protection of traffic routes and operations to protect against marine pollution threats, such as toxic liquid spills.

With a length of 95 meters, a displacement of 2,300 tons and capacity for 97 crew members, the new ships are at the cutting edge of technology. The so-called “marine cockpit” is particularly innovative: this is an integrated workstation developed jointly by Leonardo and Fincantieri NexTech, which enables the ship and flight operations to be controlled by just two operators. From this station, which is located on the bridge, the engines, rudders and platform systems as well as some essential functions of the combat management system can be controlled.
