The Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency (NDMA) has commissioned Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to develop a tactical radio, the Combat Net Radio, for the Norwegian Armed Forces. The contract is worth just under 30 million euros for the first phase, which comprises the development and delivery of a small number of radios.
The delivery is part of the “Mime” program, which comprises combat-related IT for the Norwegian Armed Forces and in which the operational requirements and design solutions for a new tactical radio system called Thor have been defined. “It was important for us to find a future solution that could meet the sector’s need for tactical radio capabilities, reusing technology that had previously been developed and delivered to the Armed Forces,” says Gro Jære, Director General of NDMA. “We have worked closely with the Norwegian Defense Research Institute (FFI) on this delivery to ensure that the Armed Forces receive the best equipment to meet current and future requirements.”
“We look forward to working with the Norwegian Armed Forces and NDMA to develop and deliver a tactical radio that is compatible with existing systems and can be further developed with future technologies,” says Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace. The agreement describes several possible phases, with the development and small series production of the Thor VRM (Vehicle Radio Module) being the first agreed phase. Future possible phases include series deliveries, further development of the software and maintenance support.
