The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) is procuring a further twelve self-propelled howitzers 2000 (PzH 2000). A corresponding option call-off from a framework agreement was signed this week by the President of the Bundeswehr Procurement Office, Annette Lehnigk-Emden. The project was previously approved by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag.
Already At the end of March, the BAAINBw ordered ten PzH 2000s from industry under a framework agreement. Now that the option has been exercised, twelve more, making a total of 22 self-propelled howitzers, will be ordered from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) in cooperation with Rheinmetall and Hensoldt Optronics. The first self-propelled howitzers are due to be delivered to the troops in 2025. By 2026, all 22 guns handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces are expected to have been replaced. The 2000 self-propelled howitzer is the standard artillery piece of the artillery force. It uses indirect fire to support the combat troops far behind enemy lines. With the ordered PzH 2000, the Bundeswehr is receiving a tried and tested weapon system that has proven itself both in Bundeswehr missions abroad and is also designed for national and alliance defense scenarios.
