Leonardo on behalf of the EuroDASS consortium (Leonardo, ELT Group, Indra and Hensoldt) has announced the next survivability enhancement package for the Eurofighter Typhoon’s Defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS). It builds on the progress already made and draws on the ongoing investments of the EuroDASS partners.

The upgrades are tailored to the requirements of current Typhoon operators and are proposed for the Eurofighter Phase 4 Enhancement (P4E) package, which will also be available to export customers. This will also lay the foundation for the integration of the defense system with the Typhoon’s high performance E-Scan radars. This includes all versions of the Typhoon E-Scan radar, both those already in service and those currently being developed by Eurofighter partner nations. The existing DASS, named after the elite Roman bodyguard unit Praetorian, protects the Typhoon from threats such as infrared (IR/heat) and radar-guided missiles. The sensors and jamming devices integrated into the system provide the pilot with better situational awareness and equip the aircraft with a so-called “digital stealth capability”. https://www.militaeraktuell.at/ukraine-ein-krieg-mit-vielen-fronten/ In this final phase, the EuroDASS partners will integrate a number of new capabilities, which are already at an advanced stage of development, into the Praetorian system. These include a digital receiver that will enable the machines to better recognize modern and complex targets and how they operate, and to take the appropriate countermeasures. The upgrade also includes an expansion of the frequency band to operate in the increasingly complex, congested and contested electromagnetic battlespace of the future. Improvements to signal processing algorithms and processor capacity are also planned, leading to significant advances in processing speed and memory. This will allow the Praetorian system to be optimally integrated with Typhoon’s E-Scan radar options, including the new ECRS Mk.2, currently being developed by Leonard and BAE Systems for the UK Armed Forces. Leonardo is integrating the Praetorian system in Luton, where the company carries out electronic warfare research, development and production. Development of the digital receiver was led by German partner Hensoldt and work to extend the frequency band was driven by Spanish partner Indra. Further ECM and WTP cooler improvements are being carried out by the ELT Group.
