The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) and the Working Group for Close-In and Short-Range Air Defense (ARGE NNbS) signed the development contract for the Close-In and Short-Range Air Defense System (LVS NNbS) on 25 January. The contract has a gross volume of around 1.2 billion euros.

The ARGE NNbS consortium, founded in 2021, includes the companies Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH (Bremen), Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG (Überlingen) and Hensoldt Sensors GmbH (Taufkirchen). The order is divided between the partner companies according to their performance shares as follows: Rheinmetall 607 million euros, Diehl 339 million euros and Hensoldt 284 million euros. The introduction of the LVS NNbS is a decisive step towards fulfilling Germany’s role in NATO as a leaning nation in ground-based air defence and in the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), thus closing a significant capability gap in the Bundeswehr. https://militaeraktuell.at/bundesheer-soldatin-nimmt-an-bundeswehr-uebung-teil/ The core of the LVS NNbS development project is the optimization of medium-range air defence and the development of highly mobile air defence capabilities to protect deployed troops from airborne threats – even while on the move. The contract now awarded is aimed at implementing the necessary solutions for networking individual components, integrating the IRIS T-SLM air defence system, establishing interoperability and extending the interception range to the short range. This networking enables the connection of the Iris T-SLM fire units already in procurement as well as the Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft gun tank to be procured in the future, which is based on wheeled tanks Pandur Evolution also with the Austrian Armed Forces is to be introduced in the army. The project is being developed and manufactured by national industry. The federal government’s contractual partner is ARGE NNbS. With its Electronic Solutions and Vehicle Systems divisions, Rheinmetall is contributing its technological expertise and many years of experience in the development and supply of defense systems, particularly in the areas of vehicles, communications and integration. Diehl Defence is a leading systems house for air defense systems. Headquartered in Überlingen, Germany, the company’s product portfolio includes systems for ground-based air defense, guided missiles for all branches of the armed forces, ammunition for the army, air force and navy as well as protection systems. As a supplier of national key technologies, Hensoldt contributes its expertise and field-proven products such as radars. This takes into account the comprehensive commonality of the products, for example as part of the product family concepts and above all in the areas of air surveillance, classification and identification.
