Rheinmetall has received an order from an international partner to supply kits for Fuchs 2 armored vehicles. Production is to take place in the partner country. The current follow-up orders also include kits for conversion and the supply of spare parts packages.
According to a recent press release from the German armaments company, the volume of the order is in the “three-digit million euro range”. It was booked in December 2023. The kits and conversion kits will be delivered between 2024 and 2028. In recent years, the production facility in the partner country has seen an increase in value added and investments to ensure machining, welding and surface treatment steps. The strategic and long-standing partnership is thus entering a new, promising phase, which also includes the possibility of future exports of Fuchs 2 vehicles from the partner country. https://militaeraktuell.at/das-bundesheer-praesentiert-das-risikobild-2024/ To date, a total of around 1,800 Fuchs vehicles have been built. The armed forces of numerous nations use them in a wide range of variants, for example as armored personnel carriers, command posts or ambulances as well as for NBC reconnaissance. The German Armed Forces has been using the Fuchs 1 in a variety of versions since 1979. More than 100 Fuchs 1 vehicles have been deployed in Afghanistan, among other places. The Fuchs 2 is a further development of the Fuchs 1, including an enlarged interior, a more powerful engine, a modernized chassis, improved modern protection and digital vehicle electrics. The Bundeswehr has a total of around 940 Fuchs vehicles, 272 of which are 1A8s. This Fuchs 1 version already guarantees significantly improved protection against mines and booby traps compared to older models, while the ballistic protection of the vehicles has also been increased. The main modifications to the Fuchs 1A8 include structural changes to the hull, new seats and seat suspensions in the crew compartment for decoupling from the hull floor, reinforcements to the wheel arches, doors and windshield mounts as well as additional stowage boxes and reinforcements to the exterior.
