Rheinmetall has been acquired by the German Armed Forces in an important project for tactical communication in order to solve existing communication problems. The framework agreement provides for the delivery of up to 191,000 sets of the “intercom set with hearing protection function” over a period of seven years. The order volume is worth up to 400 million euros.

However, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag had imposed conditions on the project: 30,000 sets including connection cables with delivery in 2024 have been firmly ordered. A call-off for the delivery of a further 30,000 sets for 2025 is expected. These two delivery batches financed by the special fund will be worth up to around 140 million euros. https://militaeraktuell.at/neues-buch-zur-airpower-2022-erschienen/ The speech set with hearing protection function – known as SmG for short – includes modern active earmuffs that attenuate harmful impulse noise and can amplify low-level sounds. The system also has a microphone and can be connected to various radio devices so that voice radio communication is possible. In addition to the combined headset, the scope of delivery includes various push-to-talk (PTT) buttons and different cable sets for connecting to the various radios and on-board voice communication systems. Rheinmetall has involved two companies as subcontractors for the project: 3M Peltor with the ComTac VIII headset and Ceotronics AG with CT-Multi PTT 1C and 3C. The SmG is equipped with the new combat helmet also supplied by Rheinmetall as well as with other Bundeswehr helmet types.
