In return for Turkey’s approval of Sweden’s accession to NATO, the US government has reportedly as reported a few days ago gave the green light for the export of up to 40 new F-16 fighter jets and 79 F-16V upgrade kits for older Turkish Air Force F-16s. Ankara had previously approved the Eurofighter as an alternative to the desired F-16s – but this scenario does not seem to be off the table despite the F-16 agreement.

In recent years, Berlin has only occasionally approved arms exports to NATO partner Turkey.
