Four MEKO 200 HN (Hellenic Navy) class frigates have been in service with the Greek Navy since the mid-1990s. In order to extend the service life of the fleet, the navy is planning a mid-life upgrade for the ships. The Hellenic Navy opted for the original manufacturers of the respective systems: Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Thales.
Thales and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems have formed a consortium to handle the order; the corresponding contract was signed at the end of last year. https://militaeraktuell.at/bundesheer-plant-grossuebung-schutzschild-2024/ Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will be responsible for modernizing the ship platform as part of this collaboration. As a system house, the company will supply not only the design documents but also the communication systems. To this end, a subcontract will be awarded to Hagenuk Marinekommunikation, a subsidiary of Atlas Elektronik. In addition, the ship platform adaptations will be carried out by subcontracting a Greek shipyard. Thales will in turn provide the Combat System of the MEKO 200 HN frigates with the Combat Management System TACTICOS. The CEO of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Oliver Burkhard, was delighted with the order: “With the joint contract for the modernization of the Greek frigates, we are once again a strong partner for the Greek Navy. On the one hand, this strengthens our order book and, on the other, underlines our role and strength as a maritime powerhouse that combines electronics, surface and underwater shipbuilding under one roof.”
