At the Schwarzenberg barracks in Salzburg, basic military personnel, cadre soldiers and service personnel once again had the opportunity to take part in a blood donation campaign in cooperation with the Red Cross. This regular campaign, which takes place several times a year, ensures that the supply of blood reserves in Austria is continuously guaranteed.
Why every donation is so important
In Austria, an average of one unit of blood is needed every 90 seconds. As a reserve can only be kept for 42 days, regular donations are essential. For many young soldiers doing their basic military service, this is the first opportunity to donate blood themselves – an experience that often leaves a lasting impression. A donation that only takes a few minutes can save someone’s life.
Advantages for the donors
The donors themselves also benefit from donating blood: In addition to determining the blood group and rhesus factor, important values such as the haemoglobin level are checked and special antibodies are detected. If any abnormalities are detected, the donor is informed. But the greatest benefit is the good feeling of helping others.
With great support, 247 blood donations of 450 milliliters each were collected.
