Kongsberg Maritime has been selected by Austal USA to supply its Promas propulsion system for the latest vessel in the US Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) Heritage Class program. This initial order includes the supply of Kongsberg Maritime equipment for the fifth vessel, the Coast Guard Cutter “Pickering”, which will be the first vessel to be built by Austal USA at their Alabama shipyard.

The Coast Guard’s new OPC program represents a significant investment in maritime capabilities and is expected to include up to 25 vessels. The new vessels will replace the Coast Guard’s current mid-life fleet and address the need for long-term offshore capabilities to maintain current and future operational readiness. The OPC vessels are designed to conduct long-range patrols. With a length of 110 meters and a top speed of 22.2 knots (just under 41 km/h), the vessels have a range of more than 16,000 kilometers at an average speed of 14 knots (25 km/h). https://militaeraktuell.at/rheinmetall-australien-auftrag-fuer-deutsche-boxer/ “Our Promas systems typically provide efficiency savings of around six percent, allowing the vessels to increase their range, which can be critical in longer operations,” said Björn ten Eicken, Kongsberg Maritime, Vice President – Naval. “Kongsberg Maritime is proud to provide mission-critical technology for U.S. Coast Guard programs. We look forward to working with the Coast Guard and Austal USA to deliver these high performance vessels.” The Promas propulsion system combines rudders and controllable pitch propellers to optimize the vessel’s hydrodynamic characteristics and enable higher efficiency and thrust with lower energy consumption. In addition to the two Promas, Kongsberg Maritime will also supply the rudder system, rudders, fin stabilizers and tunnel thrusters for the OPC.
