Almost half of the Allentsteig military training area is at acute risk from unexploded ordnance. Nevertheless, agricultural and forestry work must be carried out in this zone in order to comply with official requirements. In order to be able to carry out this work, the staff of the military training area recently took delivery of the first of a total of nine new Steyr 6300 Terrus CVT shrapnel-protected tractors.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner at the handover: “You can see how wide-ranging the tasks of the Austrian Armed Forces are. From airspace surveillance to landscape conservation of the Natura 2000 area. All these challenges can only be met with a serious budget. I am therefore very proud that we have succeeded for the third time in a row in achieving the highest defense budget in history for the Armed Forces. This means that we can also provide you with adequate and safe equipment to fulfill your mission.”

At 157 square kilometers, the Allentsteig military training area is the largest military training area in Austria. 110.65 square kilometers of it are a Natura 2000 nature conservation area. A unique natural jewel in Austria in terms of the predominant flora and fauna. With more than 200 shooting days and around 100,000 overnight stays per year, the military training area is very busy. With a total of around 500 permanent jobs at the Allentsteig garrison, the army is also one of the largest employers in the Waldviertel region.
