Every year, the best press photographs are honored with the World Press Photo Awards and subsequently shown in a traveling exhibition in more than 80 cities worldwide. This photograph by Irish photographer Ivor Prickett, which was taken during the battle for Mosul at the beginning of 2017, is also part of the current exhibition. It shows Iraqi special forces after a suicide attack by the Islamic State using a car bomb in the Al Andalus district near East Mosul. Prickett won first prize in the “General News Stories” category with his series of pictures published in the New York Times (the photograph is part of it). Two photos from this story were also nominated in the “Picture of the Year” category.
