With the support of Sweden and the United Kingdom Saab has now submitted its proposal for the replacement of the aging Dutch Walrus-class submarines. The proposal includes four boats of an advanced new submarine design based on the well-known Blekinge class (also known as Type A26) and involves a collaboration with the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group.

According to a recent Saab press release, the boat will “incorporate the latest capabilities and technologies” and its modular design will “allow the integration of modern technologies in the future”. This means that development capability is “guaranteed for many years to come”. https://militaeraktuell.at/die-wehrhaftigkeit-staerken-ein-gastkommentar/ “The C718 thus meets Dutch needs and requirements in the long term,” says Mats Wicksell, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s Kockums business unit. “Our offering represents a significant contribution to the operational capability of the Dutch defense forces, the boat meets all the requirements of the Royal Netherlands Navy for long range operations, crew comfort and weapons payload. Cooperation with local industry throughout the program also ensures strategic autonomy for the Netherlands.” Saab also claims to offer “a proven and integrated weapon delivery system and one of the best sensor systems in the world”. The design also includes “signature solutions to minimize detection by active sonars”.
