Rheinmetall receives more than 130 million euros in funding from the European Union to increase ammunition production. This means that more than a quarter of the total sum of 500 million euros awarded by the EU under the Act of Support in Ammunition Production (ASAP) to expand production of 155-millimeter artillery ammunition and powder will flow into a total of six projects of Rheinmetall AG’s European subsidiaries. The funding will support projects in Germany, Hungary, Romania and Spain.

ASAP is the first EU funding measure for the expansion of ammunition production. The corresponding grant agreements are expected to be signed in May. Rheinmetall has been increasing its production capacities since 2022. The company’s goal is to produce 1.1 million artillery shells per year by 2027. From 2026, 1.5 million propellant charge modules and 3,000 tons of RDX explosives are also to be produced annually. https://militaeraktuell.at/saalfeldner-soldaten-bei-uebung-rhodope-2024-in-bulgarien/ “We are grateful for the confidence of the European Union in Rheinmetall, one of the most important European suppliers of 155-millimeter ammunition, to play a major role in the grant,” says Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. “The great importance of artillery is evident from Ukraine’s defensive campaign. The European armed forces also need to replenish their stocks of artillery ammunition. We are ready for this and are already working on it.” Further tenders are expected from the EU in the future. Among other things, the recently published proposal for a European Defense Investment Programme (EDIP) plans to promote the expansion of production capacities for other defence products.
