The Armed Forces has recently increased the operational capability of its forces by introducing a reaction militia. This is intended to be ready within 48 to 72 hours in the event of an emergency and provide assistance and support in critical situations. In order to achieve the required personnel strength, a new personnel recruitment strategy has now been implemented with the “Militia Network”.

Militia soldiers are supposed to recruit other militia soldiers. In return, they receive a reward of 250 euros. So far, 469 militia soldiers have signed up for the reaction militia. Soldiers in the fighter companies and the reconnaissance platoon are being sought – from IT experts to drivers, paramedics and infantry. The aim is to further expand and strengthen the reaction militia.

“The militia is an integral and important part of the armed forces. Our militia soldiers make a significant contribution to operational readiness.”

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “The militia is an integral and important part of the armed forces. Our militia soldiers make a significant contribution to operational readiness. Thanks to the rapid action of the reaction militia, it is possible to respond to threats around the clock. New measures are intended to increase the size of the reaction militia. I am proud of all the soldiers who are already part of it.”

The reaction militia has a higher level of readiness than the militia. From the time they are alerted, the soldiers are ready within 48 hours to help with natural disasters, relief operations or border area surveillance. As part of the “Militia Network”, militia soldiers who recruit other militia soldiers are to receive a reward of 250 euros for their commitment and motivation. The soldiers of the reaction militia receive an annual recognition bonus of 6,000 euros. The reaction militia is currently based at three locations (-> the reaction militia exercises): Amstetten and Horn (Lower Austria) and Spittal an der Drau (Carinthia).
