A few days ago, the handover of the agendas of the Head of Staff and the Deputy Military Commander took place at the Vienna Military Command. The agendas of Colonel Gerhard Skalvy were handed over to his successor, Colonel Leopold Schieder.

Due to the current Covid-19 situation and the current lockdown, the handover was carried out at the Radetzky barracks with selected representatives of the staff departments, the Guard, the staff company and the service company. The duties of the Head of Staff and Deputy Military Commander are extremely extensive. This function is essentially responsible for the coordination and management of the staff as well as the deputy leadership of the Vienna Military Command.

The handover of the duties of the Chief of Staff of the Vienna Military Command took place in the Radetzky barracks.

“You have fulfilled this task to my complete satisfaction over the past years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyalty and dedication and wish you all the best and good health for the next stage of your life – your well-deserved retirement,” said Vienna Military Commander Brigadier General Kurt Wagner to the long-serving Chief of Staff Colonel Gerhard Skalvy. Colonel Skalvy was Chief of Staff of the Vienna Military Command for more than eleven years. “I would like to thank the dedicated employees who have accompanied me during my time at the Military Command. I wish them all the best for the future. I wish Colonel Schieder satisfaction and success in his new role,” said Colonel Gerhard Skalvy.

The new Chief of Staff, Colonel Leopold Schieder, said in his inaugural speech: “I have already held a number of positions in the Armed Forces during my career. Personally, I am generally interested in understanding interrelationships and complex processes and putting this ‘new knowledge’ into practice. I would ask all the departments present here to continue to contribute their commitment and solution-oriented approach and I look forward to working with them in a humane and correct manner.” At the end of the handover, Colonel Schieder received the wooden baton of the Vienna Military Command as a visible sign of his assumption of the duties of Chief of Staff. Colonel Schieder was born on July 10, 1961 in Krems an der Donau. He is married and has two grown-up children. Colonel Schieder’s last position since 2007 was as logistics officer of the 3rd Jäger Brigade. His last assignment abroad was as a staff officer in Operation IRINI at the headquarters in Rome. Immediately after his return from Italy, he joined the Vienna Military Command.
