Every topic in the combat training of military academics must also be trained in live firing. In principle, the existing military infrastructure such as firing ranges and military training areas should be used for live firing. However, the regulations also permit shooting in open terrain.
For the combat shooting during the “Asymmetric operational command” leadership training, the decision was made to conduct shooting in open terrain. A section of terrain in the municipality of Rohr im Gebirge offered the ideal conditions for this. This shooting in open terrain was also intended to show the midshipmen the possibilities of carrying out such a shooting project and allow them to experience it. In the course “Training Planning”, the specifications for such a shooting event were or will be developed.
The “Major General Sommer” class therefore carried out three platoon combat shootings on Thursday: Divided into three platoons, the ensigns each carried out an ambush with live fire. Assault rifles, machine guns and anti-tank guns were used. The shooting served to improve the leadership skills of the ensigns assigned to command functions.
