The MAN Group operates a joint venture for military trucks together with the German company Rheinmetall, a major production site for which is located in Vienna-Liesing. However, this is not affected by the turbulence surrounding the MAN plant in Steyr (Upper Austria), as a spokesperson for Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles confirmed to APA. The plant is working at full capacity and is currently processing major orders from armies in Germany, Australia, Norway and Sweden.
The seven-year framework agreement with the German armed forces covers the delivery of almost 2,300 military trucks worth around 900 million euros. The vehicles ordered by the Bundeswehr are five and 15-ton trucks from the HX family, of which around 10,000 are in use worldwide. Prior to the current orders, the Viennese company had landed a major order for 7,200 trucks for the British Army. The price range for MAN military transporters extends from a good 60,000 euros for a standard 4×4 TGM (also used by the Austrian Armed Forces) to an 800,000 euro armored 8×8 truck from the SX series with special superstructures. Rheinmetall, one of Germany’s largest defense and automotive supply companies, holds 51 percent of the joint venture, while MAN (a subsidiary of the VW Group) holds 49 percent.
