Leonardo has been awarded a contract by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) to supply its Falcon Shield C-UAS system to the Canadian Armed Forces. The company will deliver a range of systems and a ten-year maintenance package, including options for additional equipment and the development of new capabilities.
The first systems are to be delivered to the Canadian Armed Forces this year and Falcon Shield will be deployed as quickly as possible to forward operating bases to protect forces. It is a field-proven solution to the growing threat of category one to three UAS (smaller, slower and lower flying UAS), which are generally undetectable by conventional aerial surveillance equipment. However, using a mixture of different sensors, the system detects, tracks and prioritizes the relevant threats. https://militaeraktuell.at/bundeswehr-setzt-auch-auf-rheinmetall-skyranger/ Leonardo has supplied seven complete base drone defence systems (called ORCUS by the RAF) to the British Royal Air Force (RAF) for the Synergia research and development programme. The RAF also uses the systems as a national standby capability to support the emergency services. In this role, the RAF has deployed the drone defense technology at a number of high-profile events, including the 2021 G7 Summit in Cornwall and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. During the 2018 Christmas period, Falcon Shield was deployed at both London Gatwick and Heathrow airports following suspected drone sightings, allowing flight operations to resume. During the Canadian exercise “Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems Sandbox 2024” taking place in June, Leonardo will deploy Falcon Shield to defend against drones flown by the Canadian Armed Forces as the “Red Team”.
