The Swedish Procurement Agency (FMV) has awarded the German defense contractor Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG (KMW) to modernize Sweden’s Leopard 2 main battle tank fleet. By the end of 2026, 44 vehicles are to be converted.

The contract, which was signed at the AUSA international arms fair in Washington, also includes – if successful – the possibility of modernizing all of the Swedish army’s Leopard 2 main battle tanks. Among other things, the combat capability is to be improved. In addition, a higher level of protection is to be ensured and further digitalization measures and a logistics package are to be installed.
