The German Air Force has been taking part in the multinational exercise “Desert Air 2023” (DeAi23) since October 11 and until November 3. In addition to the host, the Royal Jordan Air Force (RJAF), the US Air Force (USAF) is also taking part in the maneuver in Jordan.
The German participation consists of six Eurofighter combat aircraft from the Tactical Air Force Wing 73 “Steinhoff” from Laage and a total of 80 soldiers at Al-Azrak Air Base. The exercise, which has been planned for some time, uses a fictitious scenario. Exercise flights take place several times a day with the exercise partners in order to train and fly air-to-air and air-to-ground operations as well as air refueling in exercise areas over Jordan. In addition to the cooperation with the NATO partner USA, the first exercise of German Eurofighters with the Royal Jordan Air Force (RJAF) in Jordan is in the foreground. https://militaeraktuell.at/verteidigungsausschuss-diskutierte-luftthemen/ Background
The Bundeswehr is participating in the Counter Daesh (CD) and Capacity Building Iraq (CBI) missions as part of the coalition of international forces in the fight against the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS “Islamic State”) and Jordan serves as a hub in the area of operations. For these missions, the German Air Force provides capabilities such as air surveillance and operational support for the multinational coalition with tanker aircraft from Al-Azrak Air Base. During the exercise, the German exercise contingent DeAi23 relies on the operational contingent stationed in Al-Azrak (e.g. accommodation, logistics, IT), but is not part of the German operational commitment in Jordan.
