This week, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner launched the general refurbishment of three crew quarters at the Allentsteig military training area. Once the work is completed in the fall of 2023, the training troops will have modern accommodation that meets today’s standards.
“Preparing for deployments at home and abroad requires our soldiers to put in maximum physical and mental effort. It is therefore important to me that modern accommodation is available for the troops on training during the few recovery phases. To this end, a comprehensive new construction and renovation program is currently underway in the Austrian Armed Forces, which will continue with the general refurbishment of the three M-blocks,” says Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner. Three crew blocks (M1, M2 and M3) and the associated infrastructure are being completely renovated at the Kaufholz camp at the Allentsteig military training area. After a construction period of 17 months, the crew buildings will be converted into modern accommodation that meets today’s standards. In addition to the accommodation, each building will be equipped with offices, a dining hall and recreation, sanitary and storage rooms. The Austrian Armed Forces are investing around 14 million euros in the general refurbishment of the three crew quarters. In addition to a thermal refurbishment of the outer shell of the buildings, photovoltaic systems will be installed on the roofs. This will significantly reduce the energy requirements of the crew blocks and contribute to the sustainable conservation of resources. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC4U2FMcXos The Allentsteig military training area is the largest military training area in Austria. Covering a total area of 157 square kilometers, it is used by the Austrian Armed Forces to prepare for operations at home and abroad, including live firing with all weapons systems used by the armed forces. Shooting takes place on the firing ranges of the military training area more than 200 days a year. Soldiers from all over Austria ensure high utilization of the accommodation with around 100,000 overnight stays per year. The military training area has seven identical crew quarters for the practising troops in the Kaufholz camp. The first five of these were handed over to the army for use in 1976, and two more were added in 1984. The general refurbishment of the other crew quarters is planned following the completion of the general refurbishment of the crew blocks M1 to M3.
