The Pioneer Battalion 2’s Tradition Day was celebrated with a ceremony in Lehener Park in Salzburg. At the same time, 154 recruits were sworn in.

The battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Klaus Rosenkranz, and the military commander of Salzburg, Brigadier Peter Schinnerl, paid tribute to the importance of the recruits’ service for the defense of the country. The event was accompanied by the flag delegations of traditional associations and the Austrian Comradeship Association as well as the music of the Salzburg Military Band under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Johann Schernthanner.

The wreath-laying ceremony on the Salzach.

A key moment was the recruits’ pledge of allegiance, which demonstrated their willingness to take on civic responsibility. The ceremony ended with an emotional laying of a wreath in the Salzach in memory of fallen comrades. The traditional day is based on the historical achievements of the k.u.k. Pioneers, who excelled in ferry operations and bridge building during the Danube orcée near Belgrade in October 1915. This historical connection is also reflected in the choice of Lehener Park as the venue for the event, which used to serve as a training ground for pioneers and is now home to the Christian Doppler Gymnasium.
