BAE Systems has been awarded a contract by Australia to upgrade the existing Mk 45 Mod 2 naval gun systems on Anzac class frigates with a Common Control System (CCS). This will modify existing Mk 45 systems to eliminate obsolescence issues and thereby extend the life of the gun system.

The CCS upgrade replaces the electronics of earlier Mk 45 Mod 1 and Mod 2 gun systems and makes them compatible with the Mk 45 Mod 4, the latest configuration also used by the US Navy. The upgrade not only ensures commonality and interoperability with the US Navy’s weapon systems, but also that longer-range precision guided munitions – such as the Hypervelocity projectile – can be integrated in the future. https://militaeraktuell.at/the-story-of-austin-cars/ “Upgrading the Common Control System is the most cost-effective way to extend the life of the Mk 45 gun systems and enable them to deliver critical naval fire and create a configuration that allows for the integration of future precision guided munitions,” said Brent Butcher, Vice President of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. “We are committed to modernizing and equipping allied nations with improved Mk 45 gun systems to counter current and future threats.” The CCS upgrade ensures that the Mk 45 gun systems can be supported for decades to come and are ready to support modern munitions and future mission capabilities at a significantly lower cost than a new gun. The first delivery of the upgraded system is expected in early 2026.
