According to a press release from BAE Systems at the end of September, the company was awarded a contract by the US Navy for the maintenance and modernization of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer “USS Halsey” (DDG 97). If all additional options included in the contract are exercised, this sum could increase to more than EUR 200 million.

As part of this DMP (Depot Maintenance Period) contract, the 155-meter-long ship will be dry-docked at the BAE Systems shipyard in San Diego. Work will then be carried out to preserve the underwater hull, the ship’s Aegis combat system will be improved with the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (Block 3) and the command and control systems will be upgraded. The living quarters for the ship’s 260 crew members will also be upgraded. Work should have already begun and continue through 2026. https://militaeraktuell.at/scharfschuetzen-ausbilder-mattle-im-interview/ “This type of in-depth repair work is necessary and critical to maintaining the combat capability of the USS Halsey,” said Eric Icke, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair. “Our team in San Diego is ready to perform the assigned DMP work that will allow the Halsey to enter her next phase of fleet readiness.” Recently, similar work was performed at the San Diego shipyard aboard the USS Mustin (DDG 89). The USS Halsey is the 47th ship in the Arleigh Burke class of guided-missile destroyers and was commissioned in July 2005. It is the second Navy ship to be named in honor of Fleet Admiral William F. “Bull” Halsey, who was killed in action during World War II. World War II achieved fame in the Pacific theater.
