Allison Transmission and Leonardo DRS were honored with the Technology Innovators Award 2020 by the US trade magazines “Military & Aerospace Electronics” and “Intelligent Aerospace”.
An independent panel of judges awarded Allison and Leonardo the highest honor, the Platinum Award, for their transmission in the Titan On Board Vehicle Power (OBVP) system for medium and heavy military vehicles. The Technology Innovators Award recognizes companies that provide design solutions for military and aerospace applications. “Allison is proud to be recognized for our collaborative work with Leonardo DRS in the development of OBVP technology,” said Ken Adgie, Director of North America and U.S. Government Defense Business at Allison Transmission. “The need for flexible propulsion solutions that enable on-board electrical power has grown with the use of computers, air defense radars and similar equipment in military vehicles. We are grateful for this prestigious award and for the military’s confidence in our reliable drive systems for use in the most difficult conditions.”
The Platinum Award-winning powertrain solution was developed as part of a partnership between Allison Transmission and Leonardo DRS. The Titan On Board Vehicle Power (OBVP) system utilizes a generator that is fully integrated into the housing of an Allison 3200 Specialty Series transmission and built into the powertrain. The OBVB helps improve mobility and reduce logistics costs by eliminating the need for vehicles to tow a separate trailer-mounted generator. When coupled with a Leonardo DRS generator and power electronics, the OBVP system is capable of generating electrical power for both on-board and off-board use – up to 120 kW when the vehicle is stationary and up to 55 kW when the vehicle is in motion. Allison Transmission began manufacturing automatic transmissions for tanks and other tracked vehicles in the late 1940s and later supplied transmissions specifically for wheeled military vehicles. Today, Allison offers more than 100 fully automatic transmission solutions for the reliable transportation of equipment and soldiers in tracked and wheeled military vehicles worldwide.
