On July 26, the Olympic Games (until August 11) will start in Paris. A few days ago, before the official swearing-in of the Olympic athletes by Federal President Van der Bellen, the ceremonial farewell of the army athletes took place in the Rossau barracks. Austria’s Olympic team comprises 81 athletes – 49 are competitive athletes from the Austrian Armed Forces. At around 60 percent, the Austrian Armed Forces make up the largest proportion of the Austrian Olympic team.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner said at the farewell ceremony: “The Olympic Games are a symbol of peace and unity in the world – athletes are ambassadors of these values. They not only carry the colors of our country, but also the hopes and dreams of many. The outstanding performances, team spirit and tireless commitment of the army’s athletes have already impressed at international competitions in the past. I wish all the athletes all the best and every success in Paris.”

The Army Sports Center has been promoting Austrian competitive sport with its eleven Army Sports Centers since 1962. Every year, up to 495 people, including 20 disabled athletes, are part of the Army Sports support program. Army sport traditionally provides numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, European and World Championships. The athletes of the Austrian Armed Forces have already achieved numerous successes and medals for Austria in the past.
