From November 6 to 17, militiamen from Reconnaissance and Artillery Battalion 7 trained during a special “artillery” exercise. Together with the battalion’s professional soldiers, the program included a fire control exercise in the first week and rail transport loading for live firing in the second week at the Allentsteig military training area.
Preparations for the artillery live firing
The soldiers from the self-propelled howitzer battery and the staff company moved to the Allentsteig training area with the militia soldiers. During the first two days, initial firing of the firing positions with the M-109 A5Ö self-propelled howitzers and further fire control exercises were carried out in preparation for the live firing.
Live firing at high wind speeds
After ammunitioning the self-propelled howitzers, combat readiness was established on November 15 and battery live firing began. The wind speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour posed a challenge, but with the help of the weather data and taking other factors into account, the shells were still able to hit the target. The highlight followed on the penultimate day: the firing of 15.5-centimetre explosive grenades with an extended range from the firing position into the target area up to a distance of 16 kilometers.
