The Austrian Armed Forces have been conducting a large-scale exercise in Salzburg since September 22 and will continue until September 28 as part of the military national defense mission. A total of 230 soldiers, supported by 50 wheeled vehicles and two watercraft, are taking part in the weapons exercise ordered by the Salzburg and Tyrol Pioneer Companies in the municipalities of Hallein, Anif, Grödig, Taxach-Rif, Golling and at the Lueg Pass.

The exercise is part of the “Pioneer Shield” exercise series and is a continuation of the regular militia exercises of the Austrian Armed Forces (-> here you can find the latest army news). In accordance with the Federal Constitution, the soldiers fulfil the mission of military national defense and practice for a possible deployment.

This year, the participating pioneer companies of the militia from Salzburg and Tyrol are focusing on deepening their training in the “protection of spaces” (critical infrastructure) as part of a military protection operation. Organizational elements of Pioneer Battalion 2 will be integrated for “real-life support”, with the Schwarzenberg barracks serving as the central mobilization assembly point. In accordance with the exercise system, the pioneer companies of the “Salzburg” and “Tyrol” militia must carry out an operational weapons exercise in 2023.
