The International Military Sports Federation (CISM – “Conseil International du Sport Militaire”) is one of the largest sports federations in the world alongside the International Olympic Committee. Almost congruent with the basic idea of the Olympic Movement, CISM also aims to bring together members of armed forces from all over the world through sporting competition in order to get to know and understand each other and in this way contribute to a peaceful world. The aim of the CISM is therefore to establish lasting relationships in the fields of sport and education between the world’s armed forces. The association’s motto is: “Friendship through Sport”. Currently, the Austrian Armed Forces (-> current army news) is currently promoting the following sports as part of the CISM: Parachuting, military pentathlon, orienteering, shooting/rifle (large caliber), shooting/pistol (large caliber), skiing/biathlon, skiing/cross-country skiing. Organizationally, the Austrian Armed Forces hold international military tournaments every year in line with the ten-year plan and military world championships every two years.
