The Canadian government has Airbus Defence and Space with the delivery of four new Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft (MRTT) and the conversion of five used A330-200s. The contract is worth around 2.1 billion euros.
The new fleet, called the Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC), will replace the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) aging CC-150 Polaris (A310 MRTT). The existing A310 fleet will be used for aerial refueling operations, military, personnel and cargo transport, medical evacuations and strategic transportation of Canadian government officials. “As the world’s most advanced multi-role tanker aircraft, the A330 MRTT ideally meets Canada’s requirements to protect its sovereignty and enhance operations under both the North American Air and Space Defense Command (NORAD) and NATO,” said Mike Schoellhorn, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Defence and Space. “Canada achieves this improvement not only by enhancing interoperability with other allied A330 MRTT customer nations, but also by giving the aircraft a technological edge over the competition.” https://militaeraktuell.at/europaparlamentarier-lukas-mandl-im-gespraech-2/ The newly built A330-200s will be assembled on the A330 final assembly line in Toulouse, France. Conversion at the A330 MRTT facilities in Getafe (Spain) is planned for mid-2025. The first MRTT will be delivered to RCAF in 2027. As part of the agreement, the A330 MRTTs will be equipped with both hose and drogue as well as a boom for refueling options, cyber security solutions and countermeasures. They can all be equipped with the Airbus Medical Evacuation Kit, consisting of two intensive care units and additional stretchers, which is also included. The contract also includes a complete package of training services including state-of-the-art training equipment such as a full flight simulator.
