As of today, the Austrian Armed Forces has been on an assistance mission in Styria. Following the outbreak of forest fires in steep terrain yesterday evening in the Semriach/Graz area, two army helicopters are now helping the local fire departments to fight the fires. The Austrian Armed Forces are supporting the civilian emergency services with a Black Hawk S70 and an Agusta Bell 212 transport helicopter.
“The Austrian Armed Forces are always ready quickly when they are needed. Together with the civilian emergency services on the ground, our trained pilots help to fight the flames as quickly as possible. I wish our servicemen and women every success in their mission,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. https://militaeraktuell.at/gewinnt-china-rennen-um-6-generation-kampfjet/
Helicopter in action
The S-70 Black Hawk is a multi-purpose helicopter with two engines, each producing 1,940 hp. This drive gives the helicopter outstanding high mountain capability. The S-70 can make the most of this capability, especially on missions in mountainous terrain. This model also has a de-icing system for the rotor blades and tail rotor so that it does not have to remain on the ground in poor weather conditions (winter conditions). The helicopter has a cruising speed of 280 km/h, a range of 500 kilometers and the maximum external load for extinguishing water is 4,000 kilograms. The Agusta Bell 212 is a medium transport helicopter, has a two-blade main and tail rotor, two turbine engines, a skid landing gear, is instrument flight capable and is approved for a total of 14 people. The equipment with a cable winch (can be quickly mounted) and external load hook enables versatile use. The helicopter has a cruising speed of 162 km/h, a range of 420 kilometers and the external load for extinguishing water is approximately 1,000 kilograms.
