Frequentis is replacing the voice communication infrastructure of the Swiss Air Force operations centers and Swiss military airfields and has now reached important contract milestones in close cooperation with the Swiss Federal Office of Defense armasuisse.
“The suspension of flight connections in mid-March initially prevented us from achieving our goals for the Swiss defense projects. Specification workshops and on-site acceptances were jeopardized in May and June, but together with armasuisse we worked out an individual strategy for each milestone and the team was able to achieve corresponding success,” says Peter Skiczuk, Frequentis Vice President Defence. “Any delay would have been a logistical challenge for the subsequent phases of the project. This positive success reflects the quality of the business relationship between armasuisse and Frequentis, which has been built up over more than two decades.” Frequentis has been working on the gradual replacement of the existing Swiss voice communication infrastructure since 2016, replacing the Air Force’s FLORAKO operations centers and radio sites with modern IP technology. As part of the FLORAKO program, Frequentis supplied the first voice communication system (VCS) for the Swiss Air Force in 1999. The Viennese high-tech company has also been working on the rollout phase of the VCS Airbase project since 2019. The important on-site acceptance test for this project was finally carried out remotely – this was the prerequisite for the implementation of the secure Frequentis voice communication system, iSecCOM, at three other military airports: Payerne, Emmen (completed in July and August 2020) and Sion (completed in October 2020). For other milestones that required engineers on site – such as the implementation of the DIVOS voice recording system – air traffic restrictions required more detailed planning. Some trips could be made by car, but special transportation was arranged for other important and time-sensitive milestones. Frequentis’ state-of-the-art voice-over-IP technology will provide the Swiss Air Force with a voice communication system that, with the latest updates, will meet their exacting requirements. The Frequentis iSecCOM enables secured and unsecured IP voice communication (RED/BLACK) for safety-critical, tactical and operational command and control systems and thus fulfills all security requirements. In compliance with military and industry standards, it provides air traffic controllers with everything they need to effectively manage their mission via telephone, intercom, radio, recording, data and conferencing services – from a single workstation and with a configurable human-machine interface. The replacement of FLORAKO ADDC’s voice communication infrastructure is scheduled to be completed by 2025, with completion of the military airports planned for 2021.
