According to estimates by the British Defense Intelligence Agency, the number of Russian soldiers killed or wounded in 2025 will total more than 400,000. Ukraine war to over 1.1 million killed and wounded – more than the strength of the Russian army before the invasion began.

According to London, the ongoing “meat grinder” attacks in eastern Ukraine, which Russia is using to force territorial gains, are particularly costly. The months-long attempt to capture the strategically important Pokrovsk junction alone has claimed an exceptionally high number of victims – without decisive success.

At the same time, Moscow intensified its long-range attacks with drones and cruise missiles. In the night following the killing of a Russian general in a car bomb attack in Moscow, Russia attacked Ukraine with more than 650 drones and several dozen missiles. The main targets were energy infrastructure and cities in the west of the country. At least three civilians were killed, including a four-year-old child.

Russia itself continues to keep its casualty figures secret. Western estimates assume that the losses are now many times higher than the Soviet Union’s war in Afghanistan. In order to recruit new soldiers, Moscow relies on high financial incentives – especially in poorer regions and republics – to keep the burden away from the urban elites.

Parallel to the fighting, talks on possible security guarantees for Ukraine continued in the USA. President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of “substantial progress”, while Washington reacted more cautiously. Russia continues to signal its rejection of revised Western proposals.

The situation on the front remains tense. Ukrainian units recently reported heavy Russian attacks in the Siversk area, while Ukrainian drones once again hit targets deep in the Russian hinterland – including a petrochemical plant with suspected significance for the Russian arms industry.
