Turkey is celebrating a historic breakthrough: Spain signed a contract this week for the delivery of 30 Hürjet jet trainer aircraft from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI/TUSAŞ) in cooperation with Airbus Defense & Space signed (-> TAI and Airbus sign cooperation agreement for Hürjet trainers).

The contract for the “Integrated System for Advanced Flight Training” of the Spanish Air Force as the successor to the F-5 (AE.09) is worth 2.6 billion euros. Delivery of the aircraft is scheduled to begin in 2028.

The package includes an integrated training architecture for the advanced training of fighter pilots, ground-based simulation and training systems, the necessary maintenance infrastructure and elements for long-term operational support. Airbus Defense and Space has been tasked with the development and implementation of the new Integrated Combat Training System (ITS-C).

It is also planned to integrate Spanish components in line with the customer’s requirements, set up an aircraft conversion center in Spain, modernize the training center at the fighter and attack school at the Talavera la Real airbase in Extremadura and provide an integrated range of operations and maintenance services at this location.

Today, it was officially announced that the Hürjet – TUSAŞ’s flagship aircraft and Turkey’s first national jet training aircraft – has been selected by the Spanish Air and Space Forces for their new integrated advanced flight training system. The fact that Hürjet, which we have developed and continuously improved with national resources in line with the leadership and determined vision of our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has become part of the inventory of a member country of the European Union and NATO is a testament to the tremendous progress our defense industry has made. I would like to thank all engineers, technicians, pilots, the Turkish Aerospace Industries family and all stakeholders who have contributed to these significant achievements of the Hürjet.”

Details about the Hürjet

The Hürjet is a single-engine trainer and light combat aircraft developed by the Turkish state aerospace company Turkish Aerospace Industries. The aircraft is 14 meters long and has a wingspan of 9.5 meters.

The engine comes from the US manufacturer General Electric. The F404-GE-102 turbofan engine delivers 53 kN thrust dry and 78.7 kN with afterburner. This enables supersonic flights up to Mach 1.4. The aircraft reaches a service ceiling of 13,700 meters. The payload is 3,400 kilograms and the maximum range is 2,600 kilometers.
