From 2028, the Dutch army will once again have its own modern main battle tanks. State Secretary Gijs Tuinman has now signed a contract to this effect in Amersfoort. The type decision had already been made last year. The Netherlands is purchasing from KNDS at least 46 Leopard 2A8s, thereby participating in a procurement initiative of the German government.
“In view of the current threat situation due to possible large-scale conflicts, the main battle tank is an indispensable instrument,” emphasized Tuinman at the signing of the contract. “When you stand right next to it, you immediately understand why: the Leopard is pure fighting power. The best there is in the tank sector. The Leopard remains the king of the battlefield.”
A state-of-the-art battalion is created
The first new Leopard 2A8s are due to be delivered in 2028, with full delivery scheduled for 2031. By this time, the Dutch army will once again have a fully equipped and technologically modernized tank battalion.
There are also plans to integrate an unmanned component, with the battalion continuing to provide space for around 500 soldiers. The German garrison Lohheide will serve as the location.
Total costs of up to 2.5 billion euros
In addition to the main battle tanks, spare parts, special tools, equipment, factory training and comprehensive documentation will also be procured. The contract also includes an option for six additional Leopard 2A8s, which are to be called up in 2027. The total budget for the procurement is between 1 and 2.5 billion euros.
The ministry is also ordering four Leopard 2A8 DTVs (Driver Training Vehicles). These vehicles, specially designed for driver training, are intended for the “Driving and Recovery” training center in order to provide the future tank battalion with appropriately trained drivers.
In addition to the Netherlands, Lithuania is also participating in the framework agreement. Other European countries such as Norway and Sweden have also ordered Leopard tanks.
