General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has announced the sale of three MQ-9B SkyGuardian drone systems to the Polish Ministry of Defense. The MQ-9B, the company’s most advanced Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), will be used in Poland as the main platform for reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). The contract also includes two ground control stations (CGCS).
The MQ-9B impresses with its endurance and range and is able to take off and land autonomously – controlled solely via SATCOM (satellite communication). Thanks to its detect-and-avoid system, the drone can also operate safely in unrestricted airspace. https://militaeraktuell.at/jaegerbataillon-25-bewegung-in-der-luft/ “The MQ-9B SkyGuardian will provide Poland with end-to-end, cross-domain situational awareness that is essential to the country’s security,” said David R. Alexander, President of General Atomics Aeronauticas Systems. “SkyGuardian is an important security tool, and we look forward to further developing our close partnership with Poland.” Poland began deploying MQ-9A Reapers in 2022 under a lease agreement with the manufacturer. The success of these missions paved the way for the purchase of the MQ-9B systems.
The first customer deliveries of MQ-9Bs began in 2022 to the British Royal Air Force. Contracts have also been signed with Belgium, Canada (-> Canada’s MQ-9B project is progressing well), the Japan Coast Guard, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Taiwan, India and the US Air Force in support of Special Operations Command. The MQ-9B has also completed various US Navy exercises this year (-> current news about the US armed forces) this year, including “Northern Edge”, “Integrated Battle Problem” and “Group Sail”.
