Denmark will install modern airborne warning radars from the US company Lockheed Martin at the Skagen, Bornholm and Faroe Islands sites. US company Lockheed Martin at these locations. This was decided unanimously by the cross-party defense comparison group on the recommendation of the Danish Chief of Staff.

“I am very pleased that the peer group supports the procurement of air warning radars from Lockheed Martin. These radar systems are a key capability for the surveillance of Denmark and the North Atlantic region. The Kingdom’s claim to a low-tension environment is under increasing pressure, and the current security situation requires a significantly stronger presence and more intensive cooperation in the Arctic and North Atlantic. We are on the right track with this procurement,” said Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

The three air warning radars are to be delivered and put into operation in the coming years. The contract also includes the option to install a fourth radar system of the same type in Greenland. This option is linked to the decision already taken as part of the so-called Partial Agreement 2 on the Arctic and North Atlantic to install an air warning radar in East Greenland.

The Danish Chief of the General Staff, General Michael W. Hyldgaard, also emphasized the importance of the new systems: “Modern air warning radars are crucial for detecting deviations from the normal picture and specific threats at an early stage, classifying them correctly and reacting to them quickly. The new systems will give us a significantly improved situational picture that will strengthen security throughout the Kingdom and increase our ability to contribute to the integrated air defense system of NATO integrated air defense system.”

The procurement is being financed by funds from the Arctic capacity package and the Acceleration Fund, among others.
